That's right! Commercial dog food could be killing your dog, because of the preservatives it contains. Through research, it has been discovered that dog food contains at least 6 deadly chemicals that have been banned from human foods because they can cause the following:
Kidney cancer
Bladder cancer
Skin cancer
Stomach cancer
Spleen cancer
Leukemia
Liver dysfunction
Major organ failure
Immune system collapse
Severe allergic reactions
Birth Defects
Blindness
Chronic Diarrhea
Hair Loss and
Behavior problems, including increased aggressiveness
And if you think, like I did, that buying foods labeled as chemical and preservative free makes them safe, think again... it's just more lies! Many pet foods advertised as "preservative-free" do, in fact, contain preservatives. Manufacturers don't have to list preservatives that they themselves did not add. How much sense does that make??
Many preservatives make their way into pet food at rendering plants before the meat is even sent to the manufacturer. An analysis of several pet foods labeled "chemical free" or "all natural ingredients" found synthetic antioxidants in all samples."
Although you won't see it on the label, since it is often added at the rendering plant and not by the manufacturer, ethoxyquin (EQ) is used to preserve most dry pet food. EQ is the most powerful of all preservatives and may be the most toxic. The use of EQ is permitted in pet food. Take note that factory workers exposed to it exhibited side effects similar to those of agent orange: a dramatic rise in liver or kidney damage...cancerous skin lesions...hair loss...blindness...leukemia...fetal abnormalities, and chronic diarrhea.
In animals, EQ has been linked to: immune deficiency syndrome...spleen, stomach, and liver cancers, and a host of allergies."
And did you know that before these animal parts and by-product used for pet food are shipped from the slaughterhouse to the rendering plant, the by-product is denatured. Which means that crude carbolic acid, cresylic disinfectant, or citronella, is sprayed on the product. That's enough to make you sick!! And certainly enough to make your dog sick!!

Reading The Dog Food Label - Researching Dog Food Labels
How much do you love your dog? A pretty silly question, don't you think? You're taking time out of your busy day to read information on the canine breed right now. So I know how much your dog means to you. So doesn't it make sense, then, that you'd select food for your dog that we know to be healthy and nutritionally sound?
Let me ask you, do you know the difference between the dog food label "Chicken Dog Food" and "Dog Food With Chicken"? What is the difference, you ask? About 22%. "Chicken Dog Food" has to have at least 25% chicken in the can, while "Dog Food With Chicken" has to only have 3% of chicken included in your dogs dinner delight!!
And the dog food manufacturers seem to be putting a lot of time, effort and money into convincing us that their products are natural and nutritionally sound with marketing gimmicks and eye-catching claims that tell us what we want to hear.
Don't spend extra money on dog food simply because "premium" is part of the description of the dog food. Products labled as "premium," "super-premium", "ultra-premium" or "gourmet" do not contain any different or higher quality ingredients, nor are they held up to any higher nutritional standards than are any other complete and balanced product.
The same way the dog food labeled with the term "natural" has little to no meaning. So I wouldn't be tempted by that term either. It can be the equivalent to a lack of artificial flavors, artificial colors, or artificial preservatives in the product.
Now that I have you a little more concerned about label reading, remember that all ingredients are to be listed in order of predominance by weigh. You will want MEAT to be the first on the list...followed by an absorbable grain, such as rice. Anything else is just not good enough for your pet!! A very simple rule to follow. I hope this information will have you spending a little more time in the dog food aisle from now on, reading what you're feeding your dog. And I have only touched a few of the highlights on this topic, you can read much more by following the link below.
We have recently come to the conclusion that commercial dog foods are nutritionally evil, and that the best diet is a homemade diet. But three factors may still sway you towards purchasing, rather than making your own food for your pet.
1) You're just not much of a cook, 2) There's the whole (obvious) convenience factor. 3) You may not be confident in your abilities to correctly ascertain your dog's needs, and the appropriate nutritional balance.
We came to your rescue! In a recent study of all the major brands (and not so major brands) of dog food, were all put to the test, rating one against the other. Paying close attention to all the ingredients that make up their product. We wanted to see if there were any dog food products that were safe to feed your dog, that wouldn't possibly cause health problems in the coming years..
Very interesting to see none of the major brands making it on the recommended list! So if you decide to go withthe winners, you will have to make the purchase online, or possibly check at the pet stores and maybe your vets office for the dog food that topped the list.
One ingredient that came up quite often was Menadione Sodium Bisulfate, a synthetic form of Vitamin K. This ingredient is both unnecessary and potentially harmful. It has been linked to the following:
v Liver cell cytotoxicity v Weakened immune systems v Potential mutagenic effects v Damage to the natural Vitamin K cycle v Hemolytic anemia and jaundice v Direct toxicity in high doses v Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes v Allergic reactions and eczema
Bad marks were given to those that used corn, wheat, "by-products", dairy, sugars, artificial colors, flavors and chemical preservatives. It was surprising to see corn as the first ingredient on many of the major dog food cans. Other common finds were Chicken By-product Meal, Meat Meal, Meat & Bone Meal, Animal Fat.
You will certainly want to get the scoop on who scored the highest, and who didn't make the list at all. This study may motivate you to try your hand at baking a delicious homemade doggie recipe, or doggie biscuit in the near future!
